GMO deregulation is now law – but our fight is not over
Genetically modified organisms in my food, in my garden, on my field? Today, strict GMO regulations ensure that all genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are assessed for risks, labelled, and traceable. Consumers, farmers, and breeders can rely on this to make informed choices about what they eat and grow.
This right to transparency and freedom of choice has now been seriously weakened. On 17 June 2026, the European Parliament approved a major carve-out from EU GMO law. Most plants engineered using new GM techniques – such as the “gene scissors” CRISPR/Cas – can now be marketed without proper labelling, traceability, or prior risk assessment. The new rules will apply from 17 July 2028.
Thanks to your support, 211,738 emails were sent to Members of the European Parliament, calling on them to safeguard GMO-free farming, GMO labelling, and organic plant breeding, and to reject patents on seeds. Our email tool for this campaign is now closed.
