Contaminating the Wild
US field trials of experimental genetically engineered (GE) crops pose unassessed risks to wildlife, yet government regulators have inadequate safeguards to protect the environment from genetic contamination. The report examines the history of field trials of GE crops and warns that potential hazards will increase with increasingly powerful and unpredictable engineered genes.

Audit report: APHIS Controls Over Issuance of Genetically Engineered Organism Release Permit
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Office of Inspector General "Current (USDA) regulations, policies and procedures do not ensure the safe introduction of agricultural biotechnology". The USDA audit report says the agency "lacks basic information" on where field tests are or what is done with the crops after they are harvested.

Can crop transgenes be kept on a leash?
Transgenes escape via the movement of pollen and seeds, and this movement is facilitated by the growing number of incidents involving human error. Even the best designed risk management can be foiled by human error, a reality that is underestimated by most GM crop-risk analyses. Thus, our evaluation of risk should assume that whatever transgene is being examined has a good chance of escaping.
