 Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection, BMVEL
The BMVEL is the leading ministry for the use of genetically modified organisms in agriculture and food. Especially department 2 of the ministry (referat 222) deals with all questions concerning the presence of GMOs in agriculture and food.

 Federal institut for consumer protection and food safety, BVL
The BVL Since 2004, the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) is the leading federal authority responsible for the field of genetic engineering in Germany. The BVL thus assesses notifications for the experimental use of genetically modified organisms (GMO). The BVL is also involved in the approval of GMOs in connection with food and feed. The BVL gives advice to the Federal Government as well as the Federal States and their bodies on issues of biological safety in genetic engineering.

 Federal Institiut for Risk Assessment, BfR
The institut is responsible for the risk assessment of the insertion of GMOs into the food chain. It is not involved in the approval of GMOs in connection with food and feed.

Federal State Committee for GMOs, LAGThe German Federal States have different legislations concerning GMOs. Details about the legislations and the leading Federal State Authoritys are consolidated in the LAG.

 Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants – Julius Kühn-Institut , BBA
The federal research centres of the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV) have been re-organised. The three research centres which dealt with plants were merged at January 1st 2008. Its new name is: Federal Research Centre for Cultivated Plants – Julius Kühn-Institut. They do research into everything concerning cultivated plants.
 
Federal Plant Variety Office

The Federal Plant Variety Office Bundessortenamt is an independant senior federal authority under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection. It is responsible for granting of Plant Breeders' Rights, the registration of varieties in the National List and for variety and seed affairs.

 Federal Ministy for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, BMU
Is the leading Ministry for the risk assessment of the release of GMOs into the natural environment.

 Federal Ministry of Education and Research, BMBF
It is not involved in the approval of GMOs but the BMBF is funding research and development in this field. And it is also funding the communication system for the use of GMOs.
