EU agrees on a GM ban thanks to 70,000

More than 70,000 people have signed an online appeal drafted by 13 organizations for a genetic engineering ban on land in Europe. There was a majority vote in the Parliament (of 548 to 84) that agreed that each country could forbid genetic engineering on the land in their territories. The original draft of the EU commision for new genetic engineering laws looked very weak. As a result, liberal representative Corinne Lepage developed a proposal, suggesting the need for the ban for enivornmental and social economic reasons. Her proposal also suggests the need to revise licensing and liability laws in relation to genetically modified organisms in the EU. GM plants enter many countries in the EU. The admission procedure of the GM industry is under strong criticism. For this reason, the European Parliament must unite on this new draft.
