Monsanto's Ölsaatenraps GT73 wächst unkontrolliert
Der gentechnisch veränderte Raps GT73 wurde Ende August 2005 durch die Europäische Kommission zur Verwendung in Futtermitteln zugelassen. Die Kommission folgte dabei der Empfehlung der Europäischen Lebensmittelbehörde (EFSA). Diese hatte den gentechnisch veränderten Raps als „gesundheitlich unbedenklich“ eingestuft. Die EU-Kommission handelte, mit ihrer Zulassung des GT73 einmal mehr im Alleingang, nachdem die Umweltminister der Europäischen Union sich nicht über Genehmigung oder Verbot der Rapssorte hatten einigen können. Im Dezember 2004 hatten zwar lediglich sechs der 25 Mitgliedsstaaten eine Zulassung des gentechnisch veränderten Ölsaatenraps befürwortet, die erforderliche Mehrheit für ein Verbot kam jedoch nicht zustande. Umweltschützer wie Wissenschaftler äußerten wiederholt Zweifel an der gesundheitlichen Unbedenklichkeit, die das Gutachten der EFSA dem GT73 bescheinigt. Die Europäische Umweltbehörde (EEA) stufte den Gentechnik-Raps bezüglich seines Kontaminationrisikos als Hochrisikopflanze ein. Dabei beschränkt sich die Gefahr nicht nur auf den Anbau. In Japan wurden durch im Hafen verschüttete Rapssamen, Bodenflächen in eine Umkreis von 30 Kilometern gentechnisch verunreinigt. In Kanada hat der Anbau von GT73 dazu geführt, dass aufgrund hoher Verunreinigungen praktisch kein konventioneller und biologischer Raps mehr gepflanzt werden kann.

As the qualified majority of 232 votes required for adopting or rejecting a Commission proposal was not reached, this leaves the final decision to approve GT73 to the Commission. The Commission has already stated that it believes the introduction of this product to the Community market for industrial processing and animal feed should be authorised. "
